Addressing Disparities in Health:
A Community Approach
Prevention Institute focuses on advancing a deeper understanding of how fundamental causes of disparity, (e.g., economics and oppression) shape community environments and these environments, in turn, shape underlying determinants of health. We are pleased to share the following new and updated resources.
In the First Place: A Community Approach to Preventing Health Disparities: Executive Director Larry Cohen will deliver a special session address at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting to underscore the importance of a focus on primary prevention in the reduction of health disparities and in building a more responsive health care system for everyone. Find out more about this December 14, 2005 session.
THRIVE Tool Released: With support from the federal Office of Minority Health (OMH), Prevention Institute developed THRIVE, a community assessment tool that helps residents and local leaders identify and target community factors that hold the most promise for improving health outcomes and reducing disparities. Read the THRIVE Final Report, recently released by OMH, and learn about the updated and more user-friendly list of community factors that form the centerpiece of THRIVE. Stay tuned! We are continuing to develop THRIVE.
A Community Resilience Approach to Reducing Ethnic and Racial Disparities in Health: The American Journal of Public Health published this article by Rachel Davis, Danice Cook and Larry Cohen in its December 2005 issue.
Web-based Health Disparities Tool Coming Soon! We have received funding from the Community Technology Foundation of California to translate our health disparities resources into a web-based tool.
Strategic Facilitation, Training and Technical Assistance are available to governmental, philanthropic, and non-profit partners from Prevention Institute to build understanding of a community approach to health disparities and identify appropriate strategies for action.
