Please join us (and help spread the word) for this special Bay Area event featuring author, Robert Gottlieb, discussing his newest book, Reinventing Los Angeles: Nature and Community in the Global City, and the powerful influences of immigration and economic globalization as they intersect with changes in the politics of water, transportation, and land use. The event will also feature a gallery of paintings by Oakland artist, Rita Sklar, who specializes in "place based art." (Download an event flyer)
Gottlieb “...demonstrates how determined groups of citizens have been able to refashion Los Angeles' natural environment in innovative ways that not only preserve but expand our core values of conservation and environmental justice. [Reinventing Los Angeles] is a brilliant map charting the green future of our increasingly urban world."
- Antonio R. Villaraigosa, Mayor of Los Angeles
Sklar explores the "...dimensionality of vanishing species and traditions. The wildlife and people are reverently depicted, using maps in unique ways to convey the importance of place. These paintings signal the fundamental dichotomy of the beauty and value of wildlife and the longing for resolution of that which is threatening them."
