Violence, Food & Activity: Health Equity
Communities Taking Action is a collection of profiles that showcase successful community initiatives aimed at improving health equity. Violence not only directly contributes to poor health outcomes. When violence, or the fear of violence, is pervasive in a community, it also threatens the efficacy of chronic disease prevention strategies-designing neighborhoods that encourage walking and bicycling and providing access to healthy and affordable food retail outlets and grocery stores. While violence exists in most communities, its link to healthy eating and active living is more prominent in the most disenfranchised communities. These profiles, listed below, are examples of disenfranchised communities that have explored the link among violence, healthy eating, and activity, and have taken action toward reducing inequities in health and safety.
