Safe Routes to School National Partnership, Steering Committee Member
The Safe Routes to School National Partnership is a network of more than 300 nonprofit organizations, government agencies, schools, and professionals working together to advance the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) movement in the United States. Prevention Institute participates on the national steering committee monthly meetings and alerts Prevention Institutes' membership about how to get involved in the SR2S movement and create at new SR2S community programs.
California Walkability Expert
Prevention Institute recognizes the link between unintentional injury prevention and physical activity promotion. Manal Aboelata, Program Director at Prevention Institute was certified in 2004 by the California Department of Health Services (CDHS) California Center for Physical Activity and CalTrans as a California Walkability Expert. Several walkable community workshops have been led and co-facilitated by Ms. Aboleta. Examples of these workshops include Baldwin Park, CA, Santa Monica, CA, Downtown Los Angeles, and Echo Park, CA.
Healthy Places Coalition
The Healthy Places Coalition advances public health involvement in land-use and transportation planning to ensure that all neighborhoods in California promote the opportunity to live a healthy life. The Coalition consists of practitioners from the planning, public health, parks and recreation, and other related fields, community advocates, academics, and concerned individuals committed to social and health equity from around the state.
Eden Area Livability Initiative
Funded through Alameda County by a grant from the California Department of Transportation
Bringing optimism to communities and creating livable neighborhoods that support health requires a common vision, strong partnerships, and identifying concrete solutions to address community priorities. Prevention Institute is collaborating with Alameda County Supervisor Nate Miley on an 18-month-long livability initiative in 6 diverse communities. Through a process of sustained community engagement and strategy prioritization, using the THRIVE tool as a framework, the Eden Area Livability Initiative will develop an integrated vision of community livability, prioritize strategies necessary in order to make this vision a reality, and identify a set of catalyst projects that will address issues of greatest concern to community member and build momentum toward sustainable long-term change.
Past Projects
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
Through a contract with NHTSA, Prevention Institute provided consultation and technical assistance to public health and injury control practitioners in Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, and California (Region IX). Specific areas of focus were identifying and promoting strategies to increase seatbelt and child safety seat use and reduce the incidence of driving under the influence. Prevention Institute also facilitated information exchange between practitioners in the region by disseminating a quarterly injury prevention newsletter. Youth Educational Program (YEP)
Through a contract with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Prevention Institute worked to increase awareness and activism about traffic safety among youth of color. The purpose of YEP was to empower young people with information and tools to provide leadership in developing community solutions to reduce injuries and deaths from traffic crashes. Prevention Institute facilitated focus groups with diverse high school students, conducted interviews with youth program leaders and traffic safety practitioners, and researched best practices to produce a series of facts sheets and a toolkit for and about youth, Safe on the Streets: Cars, Safety Belts, and Drinking. The toolkit contains information, resources, and a sample presentation.
Mobilizing for a Safe USA: Focused Forums
Funded by: National Fire Protection Association/First Alert, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Children's Safety Network (CSN)
Prevention Institute held a series of focused forums across the country to bring local and regional perspectives to a nationwide effort to launch a violence and injury prevention strategy. Mobilizing for a Safe USA was a national leadership conference sponsored by a broad mix of governmental, nonprofit, and commercial agencies that took place in Atlanta in December 2001. The aim of the conference was to launch a national prevention strategy to reduce violence and injury in America. The information gathered from these focused forums is available in a report aimed at continuing to build momentum for unintentional and intentional injury prevention and to mobilize action on key strategies for violence and injury prevention. Children's Safety Network, Federal Office of Maternal and Child Health, Department of Health and Human Services
Prevention Institute provided consultation on the prevention of intentional and unintentional injuries to the federal government and fifty states via a contract with Education Development Center. Activities included providing training and technical assistance to states, assisting with coalition building and strategy development, and developing written materials and tools with a primary focus on adolescent and youth violence prevention.
SafeTREC, the Safe Transportation Research and Education Center at UC Berkeley
As a key partner in the development of a Traffic Safety Center in the western United States, we were involved in designing an interdisciplinary approach that includes public health, engineering, city planning, law enforcement, optometry, and medicine to provide focused research, training, and practice in traffic safety. Prevention Institute's primary focus on this project was the translation of the University's research into practical information for practitioners. The Healthy Eating Active Living Convergence Partnership
Prevention Institute develops resources on how to promote health and safety through transportation policy and practice, with an emphasis on the upcoming authorization of a new federal transportation bill.
Cy Pres Award
Prevention Institute builds capacity among traffic safety practitioners to work on quality injury prevention and develops strategies to advance the field and impact hard-to-reach populations.
