HEALTHY PLACES COALITION

The Healthy Places Coalition advances public health involvement in land-use and transportation planning to ensure that all neighborhoods in California promote the opportunity to live a healthy life. The Coalition consists of practitioners from the planning, public health, parks and recreation, and other related fields, community advocates, academics, and concerned individuals committed to social and health equity from around the state.

"It is unreasonable to expect that people will change their behavior easily when so many forces in the social, cultural, and physical environment conspire against change... If successful programs are to be developed to prevent disease and improve health, attention must be given not only to the behavior of individuals, but also to the environmental context within which people live."

A new report by the Having Our Say Coalition. This brief analyzes factors that influence health and the prevalence of health conditions to identify and prioritize high-need cities, counties, and communities. The brief also identifies policy recommendations for policymakers, public health experts, and community leaders to incorporate health in land use and transportation decision making to ensure our communities live healthier lives.
