When Will There Be Fruit?

When Will There Be Fruit?

How much longer must families struggle to make nutritious food purchases in the face of misleading advertising?  One year after exposing the deceptive packaging of over half of the most aggressively marketed children's foods, Prevention Institute uncovered few changes in the packaging or ingredients of 37 examined products.  The finding from this anniversary report, When Will There Be Fruit? Fruit Content of the Most Highly-Advertised Children's Food and Beverages, suggest the need for greater government regulation and oversight in how food and beverage products, particularly those targeted towards children, are packaged and marketed.  Access the full When Will There Be Fruit? study, press release, and press kit or read Setting the Bar, the companion document with recommendations for food and beverage industry action to support people in making nutritious food choices.

Action Plan to Improve Children's Food and Activity Environments

To reduce and eliminate the marketing of unhealthy foods to children is just one of eight principles outlined in a new Action Plan to combat early childhood obesity in Contra Costa County, California.  Developed by the Healthy and Active Before 5 collaborative with Prevention Institute support, the comprehensive plan details strategies to create food and activity environments that will motivate and support children and families to adopt healthy behaviors. As Kaiser Permanente spokesperson Marianne Balin says, "The Action Plan spells out how we can protect our children and safeguard our communities' health for decades ahead."
