In California, the West Modesto King Kennedy Neighborhood Collaborative has facilitated a partnership between Heifer International and Project UpLift, an after-school mentoring program. Heifer International has provided land from their farm for use by Project UpLift for a youth leadership and educational program. Teenage students from the local school visit the farm where they learn how to cultivate the land and plant and grow fresh, seasonal, organic produce. The students then harvest the produce and take it to the Farmer's Market located in the low-income community of West Modesto. The students learn agricultural, business development and leadership skills while the community receives valuable access to affordable, accessible produce.
