Strategic Alliance
Funded by: The California Wellness Foundation and The California Endowment
Prevention Institute is a founding member and coordinator of the Strategic Alliance for Healthy Food and Activity Environments. The Alliance is a coalition of organizations and individuals committed to promoting environmental and policy changes to support healthy eating and regular activity. Many aspects of the community environment, such as safe streets, school food, grocery store location, product marketing, and availability of parks, can greatly influence eating and activity behaviors. Serving as an independent voice to influence institutions, government, and industry, the Alliance seeks to improve nutrition and physical activity norms through environmental changes, with the ultimate goal of benefiting the health and wellness of all California residents. Founding members of the Strategic Alliance include: California Adolescent Nutrition and Fitness Program (CANFit), California Center for Public Health Advocacy, California Food Policy Advocates, California Pan-Ethnic Health Network, California Project LEAN, California WIC Association, Child Care Food Program Roundtable, Latino Health Access, Prevention Institute, and Samuels & Associates.

Local Policy Database The Local Policy Database project catalogues promising policies in nutrition and activity at the local level. In other disciplines like tobacco control and injury prevention, local policies have proven to be an effective stimulus for advancing policy in other locales, and at the state and federal levels. Our goal is to provide health advocates with concrete examples of physical activity / nutrition-related policies that are emerging locally and to stimulate the adoption and implementation of promising policies throughout California. If you are interested in learning more about the Local Policy Database, or if you would like to contribute a local policy that positively impacts healthy eating and activity, please contact Manal J. Aboelata, MPH at 323.296.5750 ( manal@preventioninstitute.org).

- Environmental Nutrition and Activity Community Tool (ENACT) The Strategic Alliance for Healthy Food and Activity Environments developed ENACT to offer community members realistic ways to create positive change in their food and activity environments. ENACT is a concrete menu of strategies designed to help you improve nutrition and activity environments on a local level. These strategies have been organized into seven environments that were carefully selected for their importance in individual and community health. Each ENACT strategy presents useful information based on current research and practice and includes model policies and programs, hands-on tools, articles and other publications, and resources. The strategies are structured to be interactive so that implementation can become a reality. ENACT was designed to complement current education and community efforts and to empower local action to address priority issues. Working locally can make healthy eating and regular activity a realistic option for everyone, and can bubble up to affect state and national policy.

- Rapid Response Media Network In partnership with the Berkeley Media Studies Group, the Strategic Alliance designed the Rapid Response Media Network to help California advocates influence public discussion on nutrition, physical activity, and related chronic diseases. The Network provides the news analysis that advocates need to frame the events of the day to support effective local and statewide nutrition and physical activity policy efforts. Media coverage shapes not only the public’s opinion but also that of policy makers; the Rapid Response Media Network offers an exciting opportunity to engage with local media and insert the environmental and policy perspective on nutrition and physical activity promotion into the public discourse. In addition to working with individual Rapid Response members, Strategic Alliance generates and distributes talking points and framing analysis to guide responses to major news stories and industry actions.

Healthy and Active Before 5: Action Plan to Reduce Childhood Obesity in Contra Costa County
Funded by: Heathy and Active Before 5
Prevention Institute guided the Healthy and Active Before 5 collaborative in creating a comprehensive action plan to reduce childhood obesity in Contra Costa County. The goal of the comprehensive plan is to create food and activity environments in neighborhoods and key institutions that will motivate and support children and families to adopt healthy behaviors. In particular, the plan focuses on children ages 0-5, a population that has been missing in many obesity prevention plans, policies and practices. The final plan is composed of eight key principles, developed by leaders from many Contra Costa organizations and agencies, with input from families throughout the County. More information on the Healthy and Active Before 5 Action plan can be found on their website. |
