Webinar #1: Update on Menu Labeling
Menu labeling is an important tool to allow people to make informed decisions about the foods they eat and to provide an incentive for restaurants to reformulate and improve the nutritional quality of their menu items. The federal menu labeling law, passed in March 2010, requires chain restaurants with 20 or more locations to provide calorie labeling on menus and menu boards. The FDA has not yet finalized the regulations that will lay out how the menu labeling law is to be implemented, leaving states and localities without a compass to guide their preparations to implement the national policy. Meanwhile, some states have already passed and are implementing menu labeling policies. This webinar will provide an update on the status of the national menu labeling regulations; what states have done to keep the momentum going; and how to promote restaurant labeling to help consumers better use the information to make healthier choices.

The following speakers will be presenting on the webinar:

  • Harry Chen, Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Health
  • Amy Jesaitis, Physical Activity and Nutrition Coordinator for the Healthy Heart Program, New York State Department of Health
  • Margo Wootan, Director of Nutrition Policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest
