Measuring Success: Effective Data and Evaluation Strategies for Cities

Cities dedicate a significant portion of their budgets to keeping their residents safe. Many cities, however, do not know if they are getting their money's worth, and may underutilize the data they are already collecting. In many cases, developing a strategic community-wide evaluation plan that engages all stakeholders can help cities better understand the effects their programs are having and better plan for their future violence prevention efforts.

The goal of this web conference is to provide city leaders and other advocates with an introduction to developing a strategic community-wide evaluation plan for their violence prevention strategies and to provide a case example from the City of Louisville.

Billie Weiss, MPH, co-chair of UNITY, and Michele Wood, PhD, both with the Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center's Evaluation Team will guide participants through the process of developing an evaluation plan for their city's violence prevention strategy. Strategy evaluation focuses on how well the different sectors are working separately and together with others, and whether or not intended objectives are being met. Indicators to measure progress most often include changes in risk and protective factors, community involvement and youth engagement and, most importantly, decreases in violent crimes and death.

The webinar's scope will include:

  • Assessing violence prevention needs in cities
  • Developing goals and measurable objectives
  • Creating evaluation questions
  • Identifying health and social indicators
  • Accessing data sources
  • Planning for the future
  • Where to learn more
Along with UNITY, the National League of Cities' Institute for Youth, Education, and Families is co-sponsoring this webinar to expose members of the California Cities Gang Prevention Network and the Municipal Network on Disconnected Youth to potentially useful tools and approaches
