Overview of the 2007 California Legislative Session
The beginning of this year's California legislative session introduced forty-four bills that dealt with nutrition, the built environment, physical activity/education & other issues designed to address the obesity epidemic. Of those, thirty stalled in the legislative process. Ten bills made it to the Governor's desk. Seven were signed into law, notably Senate Bill 22 (Migden) which encourages breastfeeding education and Senate Bill 601 (Torlakson) which increases monitoring of Physical Education in public schools. The Governor vetoed three others including SB 35 (Torlakson) which would have expanded the availability of joint use agreements for outdoor recreation space and SB (120 Padilla) which would have made nutrition information available on chain restaurant menus and menu boards. Specific information on bills introduced this session can be found in the legislative section of the CCPHA website. This session is sobering for nutrition and physical activity advocates because limited reform was achieved this year. However, many of the bills that stalled this year will likely resurface at the beginning of next year when the legislature reconvenes. Stay tuned for more details.
