NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DATA

2004 California County by County Profiles on hunger and nutrition (PDF)
California Food Policy Advocates has released county profiles which include data on eligibility and participation for school lunch, food stamps, summer meals and CACFP, as well as a series of nutrition and health indicators. Among the key findings: due to low participation and the 1,400-plus schools that don't offer school breakfast, California turns away more than $437 million in federal school breakfast funding each year. Given the nutrition problems in your community, we can't afford to lose any nutrition funding, much less resources of this magnitude.

CA County Food Assistance Binder
Contains recent data on food insecurity, poverty, food stamp usage, school breakfast program usage, national school lunch program usage, WIC usage, and body weight status for low-income children, broken down by individual counties or county groups within California.

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
The BRFSS, the world's largest telephone survey, tracks health risks in the United States. You can search for prevalence and trend data nationally and by state for fruit and vegetable consumption, exercise, obesity and overweight.

Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section Statewide Surveys
The Cancer Prevention and Nutrition Section of the California Department of Health Services conducts four statewide surveys related to diet and activity among California residents. California Dietary Practices Survey, California Teen Eating, Exercise and Nutrition Survey, and California Children's Healthy Eating and Exercise Practices Survey (phone and diary) all provide critical information to helping California meet State and federal goals for activity and nutrition. This site provides an overview of the surveys, links to the survey instruments and related reports.

The Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health
The Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health (CATCH) is a school-based health promotion, study. The four study sites included: San Diego, CA; New Orleans, LA; Minneapolis, MN; Austin, TX and a coordinating center in Watertown, MA. The study includes 96 elementary schools targeting changes in dietary behaviors, physical activity and smoking with 3rd through 5th grade children over three school years.
