TAKING ACTION FOR A HEALTHIER CALIFORNIA

It is much more than a vehicle for stimulating jobs and the economy. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) presents Governor Schwarzenegger and the Administration with a prime opportunity to put a down-payment on the health and well-being of all Californians. Realizing the Vision for a Healthy California offers priorities for leveraging these dollars to generate equitable opportunities and leave a legacy of health for generations to come.

A History of Action

In 2005, California's Governor convened an Action Summit on Health, Nutrition and Obesity, adopted a 10-point Vision for a Healthy California and signed legislation to improve school nutrition standards, calling current trends in obesity 'dangerous and unacceptable'.

The Strategic Alliance helped to shape this vision with Taking Action for a Healthier California. Today, we can use federal stimulus dollars to help make the vision for a healthy California a reality.

2006

Strategic Alliance releases Recommitting to Health on the one-year anniversary of the Governor’s Summit, taking stock of the progress made. California Obesity Prevention Plan: A Vision for Tomorrow, Strategic Actions for Today  is released, and strongly reflects the 10 Taking Action priorities.

2007

Strategic Alliance releases "Where's the Fruit?", which revealed that roughly half of the most aggressively marketed children's foods advertising fruit on the packaging actually contained no fruit ingredients. After wide media coverage, and as follow-up, "Setting the Bar" is released to urge food, beverage and restaurant industries to make meaningful changes to support people in making nutritious food choices.

2008

Members of the Strategic Alliance Steering Committee provide testimony at a hearing held by the California Senate Select Committee on Obesity and Diabetes. The committee, chaired by Senator Padilla, concluded that the Governor and his administration have done little to uphold commitments to improve nutrition and physical activity environments throughout California. The Strategic Alliance proposes a variety of recommendations to get California’s Obesity Prevention agenda back on track.

2009

Strategic Alliance releases Realizing the Vision, its analysis of the opportunities to invest in health with Federal Stimulus dollars to legislative leaders and California's advocacy community.
