Hunger Action Day

Every year, Hunger Action Los Angeles is part of a statewide convergence of low income people and advocates up to the state Capitol for a spirited rally and visits with their legislators. This year there are many threats to programs that help poor people survive in California---including CalWORKs and SSI---and our assemblymembers and senators need to hear from us.

Youth Engagement Training and Sharing Forum

California Project LEAN is hosting a half-day forum in Southern California to discuss working with youth to monitor, implement and revise local school wellness policies. Participants will have the opportunity to share successes and challenges, hear about successful projects, and receive resources and tools. Training sessions and sharing forum will feature youth who have conducted:

- Vending machine audits
- Campus marketing audits
- Healthy eating and physical activity promotional campaigns

IMCL Conference - True Urbanism: Designing the Healthy City

International Making Cities Livable (IMCL) has an a great conference planned with many inspiring keynote speakers: Presidential Award winner Dick Jackson MD, will discuss the impact of the built environment on health; Peter Benson, author of “All Kids Are Our Kids” will describe what communities must do to raise caring and responsible children; LA Planning Director Gail Goldberg will talk about creating urban villages; Portland , OR, Planning Director Gil Kelley will present Portland’s new family-friendly initiatives; Perry Bigelow will illustrate design elements for child-friendly neighborhoods; and Governor von Ungern-Sternberg will present child-friendly town planning in Germany.

Healthy Parks Healthy Communities Coming to Oakland

Parks and open spaces play an important role in providing people with places where they can engage in physical activity such as sports, leisurely strolls, or bicycle rides along trails and greenways. Low-income communities of color at the highest risk for inactivity also have the least access to parks and open spaces, which is why financing them in underserved areas is vital. But financing for new parks or maintaining existing ones can present a challenge. How do we creating funding opportunities for parks and other open spaces that support critical physical activity?
Trust for Public Land and Prevention Institute will be conducting a day-long training on the importance of parks and funding mechanisms communities can employ to create and maintain parks in their neighborhoods.
