WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND STEPS TO HEALTH KING COUNTY

Funded by: Washington State Department of Health and Steps to Health King County

Prevention Institute conducted a two-day training institute, "Sustaining Prevention through Local Policy and Organizational Practice Change," for over 200 participants in April 2005. This first-of-its-kind training was organized through a broad collaborative effort several public health programs working to address their goals through policy change, including ten Department of Health programs and Steps to Health King County. The vision for the training evolved from a previous training conducted for Steps to a Healthier Washington.

The interactive training explored the role of norms change in reducing tobacco use and exposure to second hand smoke, increasing healthy eating and physical activity, and preventing diabetes and asthma. Participants learned about tools and a framework to engage in systematic planning and implementation of policy-focused interventions as they progress through multiyear projects. Participants also strengthened their skills for advancing comprehensive approaches through multi-sector collaboration. Training activities encouraged interaction and group learning within and across funded sites.
