UNITY: Urban Networks to Increase Thriving Youth Through Violence Prevention
Funded by: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and The California Wellness Foundation (TCWF)
UNITY builds support for effective, sustainable efforts to prevent violence before it occurs so that urban youth can thrive in safe environments with supportive relationships and opportunities for success. Co-chaired by Larry Cohen of Prevention Institute, Deborah Prothrow Stith of the Harvard School of Public Health, and Billie Weiss of the Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center at the UCLA School of Public Health, UNITY seeks to maximize existing violence prevention resources and promote sustainability, by proposing a paradigm shift –from programs to strategy. Activities include: Assessment of Youth Violence in USA Cities, the UNITY RoadMap for Violence Prevention, Prioritized strategies, fostering a peer network, and training and technical assistance.

Preventing Child Sexual Abuse & Exploitation
Funded by Ms Foundation
This project provides an exciting opportunity to work across sectors to identify gaps and think strategically and collectively about advancing primary prevention of child sexual abuse and exploitation to a larger scale. Prevention Institute, in collaboration with Cordelia Anderson, Dr. Jean Kilbourne, Dr. Diane Levin, and other national experts are convening to identify strategies and local policies that support a paradigm shift in the movement to prevent child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Prevention Connection: Violence Against Women Prevention Partnership
Funded by: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
As part of Prevention Connection, Prevention Institute has provided national web-based trainings on the primary prevention of violence against women for local, state, territorial, national and tribal agencies and organizations since 2004. Through a mix of didactic web conferences and interactive online ‘dialogues,’ the Institute has covered topics such as changing norms, community-wide approaches, improving collaborative work, engaging men and boys, and changing organizational practices. This work is conducted under a subcontract with the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault. View the archive of Prevention Connection online forums.

Capacity Building in Alameda and San Francisco Counties
Funded by: Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, United States Department of Justice
Prevention Institute provided consultation to Alameda County to implement its violence prevention BluePrint, trained county staff and community members, and facilitated planning and strategy meetings. The Institute also helped shape the initial phases of San Francisco’s comprehensive planning initiative, developed training materials, and facilitated strategy meetings. Finally, Prevention Institute coordinated a Bay Area Regional convening entitled, Achieving Sustainable and Effective Violence Prevention, which was hosted by Youth UpRising in September 2007.

Partnerships for Preventing Violence
Funded by: Federal Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice: Safe and Drug Free Schools, Maternal and Child Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Indian Health Services, and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
UPDATE: PPV is in the evidence base! The March, 2008 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine included highlights and outcomes of this project.
Created by Harvard University's School of Public Health, Prevention Institute, and Education Development Center, the six-part Partnerships for Preventing Violence distance learning series took a cross-disciplinary approach to the complex problem of violence in schools and communities. Through an examination of initiatives from across the country, viewers were able to explore violence prevention efforts from a range of perspectives including health, education, and justice. The series trained more than fourteen thousand violence prevention professionals via satellite. Videos of the broadcasts are available upon request from Harvard University’s School of Public Health.

Shifting the Focus: An Interdisciplinary Framework for Advancing Violence Prevention
Funded by: California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs: Prevention Services Division, National Crime Prevention Council
Prevention Institute facilitated a California state agency and department collaborative called Shifting the Focus to strengthen and coordinate government violence prevention services. The lead partners were the State’s Attorney General, Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Superintendent of Public Instruction. The collaborative focused on 1) prioritizing prevention of violence-related injury and death through state policy and practice, and 2) promoting collaboration on state violence prevention efforts in support of local efforts. As part of this effort, Prevention Institute served as California's team leader in a six-state initiative entitled Embedding Prevention in State Policy and Practice and facilitated by The National Crime Prevention Council.

Salinas Safe Schools/Healthy Students Local Evaluation
Funded by: Salinas Union High School District
Prevention Institute conducted the final phase of the local evaluation of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative in Salinas. The evaluation focused on the extent and value of collaboration, integration, and systems change in improving comprehensive services for healthy childhood development, violence prevention, and substance abuse outcomes. Findings and recommendations were summarized in Salinas Safe Schools/Healthy Students Local Evaluation Report: Toward a Community of Caring.

Toward a Community Solution: Advancing Primary Prevention of Sexual Violence in Minnesota
Funded by: Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MNCASA)
Prevention Institute trained MNCASA member agencies on comprehensive primary prevention strategies to promote healthy environments and behaviors, change norms, and reduce the likelihood that sexual violence will be perpetrated. |

Minnesota Sexual Violence Action Council
Funded by: Minnesota Health Department
Prevention Institute provided consultation and training services to the Minnesota State Health Department's Sexual Violence Prevention Action Council and lead sexual violence prevention staff on advancing primary prevention of sexual violence. Through focused efforts on youth development, healthcare/public health systems and male leadership development, the staff and Action Council emphasized changing organizational practices and policies to influence community factors and norms and forge a major movement to prevent sexual violence in Minnesota. Prevention Institute also provided leadership training through the Minnesota Sexual Violence Leadership Academy to equip public health staff and others to advance prevention work throughout the state. |

California Statewide Action Plan for the Prevention of Violence Against Women
Funded by: State of California, Department of Health Services
In collaboration with the California Department of Health Services, Epidemiology and Prevention for Injury Control (EPIC) branch and Sonoma State University, Prevention Institute facilitated planning meetings and co-developed a statewide action plan for preventing violence against women. The plan builds upon existing work to promote priorities that address multiple forms of violence against women and encourage change in policy and institutional practice.

From a Women's Problem to a Community Solution: Preventing Violence Against Women
Funded by: California Partnership to End Domestic Violence and DELTA Program
In collaboration with the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence and the DELTA Program, Prevention Institute facilitated this two-day training in Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, and San Diego to promote effective primary prevention approaches that address the underlying factors that contribute to violence against women. |
