UNITY: Urban Networks to Increase Thriving Youth Through Violence Prevention
Funded by: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and The California Wellness Foundation (TCWF)
The goal of UNITY is to support cities in preventing violence before it occurs and to help sustain these efforts. Conducted in partnership with Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith of the Harvard School of Public Health and Billie Weiss from the University of California at Los Angeles Southern California Injury Prevention Research Center, UNITY is Fostering effective communication about preventing violence; Conducting a city assessment to inform efforts; promulgating a roadmap/framework for effective and sustainable  prevention in cities: Fostering a peer network among cities; Conducting training and technical assistance; and Developing a national strategy. The UNITY RoadMap delineates 9 elements (the Who, What and How) that are correlated with lower violence rates in cities. View the UNITY website.

Prevention Connection: Violence Against Women Prevention Partnership
Funded by: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
As part of Prevention Connection, Prevention Institute has provided national web-based training on the primary prevention of violence against women for local, state, territorial, national and tribal agencies and organizations since 2004. Through a mix of didactic web conferences and interactive online ‘dialogues,’ the Institute has covered topics such as changing norms, community-wide approaches, improving collaborative work, engaging men and boys, changing organizational practices, local policy, workplaces, the healthcare sector, and the intersection of oppression and violence against women. Cultivating Peace in Salinas II

In collaboration with Partners for Peace, Prevention Institute is facilitating the review, assessment, update, and strategic re-prioritization - grounded in community wisdom and research - of the violence prevention framework, Cultivating Peace in Salinas, orginally developed in 2001.

   
     
Southern California Regional Opportunity Training and Technical Assistance
Funded by: The California Endowment
To support local efforts in Oxnard, South Los Angeles and San Bernardino, Prevention Institute is providing training and technical support to assist groups in these cities to advance a primary prevention approach to improving safety outcomes.

School, Youth and Community & Multiple Forms of Violence    
     
Capacity building in Alameda and San Francisco Counties
Funded by: Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, United States Department of Justice
Prevention Institute provided consultation to Alameda County to implement its violence prevention BluePrint, trained county staff and community members, and facilitated planning and strategy meetings. The Institute also helped shape the initial phases of San Francisco’s comprehensive planning initiative, developed training materials, and facilitated strategy meetings. The Institute also coordinated a Bay Area Regional convening entitled, Achieving Sustainable and Effective Violence Prevention, which was hosted by Youth UpRising in September 2007.
 
     
Shifting the Focus: An Interdisciplinary Framework for Advancing Violence Prevention
Funded by: California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs: Prevention Services Division, National Crime Prevention Council
Prevention Institute facilitated a California state agency and department collaborative called Shifting the Focus to strengthen and coordinate government violence prevention services. The lead partners were the State’s Attorney General, Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Superintendent of Public Instruction. The collaborative focused on: 1) prioritizing prevention of violence-related injury and death through State policy and practice, and 2) promoting collaboration on state violence prevention efforts in support of local efforts. As part of this effort, Prevention Institute served as California's team leader in a six-state initiative entitled Embedding Prevention in State Policy and Practice and facilitated by The National Crime Prevention Council.
 
     
Salinas Safe Schools/Healthy Students Local Evaluation
Funded by: Salinas Union High School District
Prevention Institute conducted the final phase of the local evaluation of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative in Salinas. The evaluation focused on the extent and value of collaboration, integration, and systems change in improving comprehensive services for healthy childhood development, violence prevention, and substance abuse outcomes.  Findings and recommendations were summarized in, Salinas Safe Schools/Healthy Students Local Evaluation Report: Toward a Community of Caring.
   
     
Partnerships for Preventing Violence
Funded by: Federal Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Justice: Safe and Drug Free Schools, Maternal and Child Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Indian Health Services, and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
Created by Harvard University's School of Public Health, Prevention Institute, and Education Development Center, the six-part Partnerships for Preventing Violence distance learning series took a cross-disciplinary approach to the complex problem of violence in schools and communities. Through an examination of initiatives from across the country, viewers were able to explore violence prevention efforts from a range of perspectives including health, education, and justice. The series trained more than fourteen thousand violence prevention professionals via satellite. Key outcomes of the initiative include: Community change (more than seventy-five percent of respondents attributed changes in their community to the broadcasts and broadcast-related local activities); Skill development to improve practice; national trained cadre of violence prevention leaders, and available training materials. (Videos of the broadcasts are available upon request from Harvard University’s School of Public Health.)
   
     

Cultivating Peace in Salinas, City of Salinas, California
Funded by: David and Lucile Packard Foundation
In collaboration with the mayor's office and a broad-based task force including the Violent Injury Prevention Coalition, Partners for Peace, youth, parents, and other community stakeholders, Prevention Institute facilitated a strategic planning process which culminated in Cultivating Peace in Salinas: A Framework for Violence Prevention. Cultivating Peace is a strategically developed plan with the ultimate goal of improving health outcomes for children, youth and families. This document is also available in Spanish.

 
   
Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence    
     
Toward a Community Solution: Advancing Primary Prevention of Sexual Violence in Minnesota
Funded by: Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MNCASA)
Prevention Institute trained MNCASA member agencies on comprehensive primary prevention strategies to promote healthy environments and behaviors, change norms, and reduce the likelihood that sexual violence will be perpetrated.
   
     
Minnesota Sexual Violence Action Council
Funded by: Minnesota Health Department
Prevention Institute provided consultation and training services to the Minnesota State Health Department's Sexual Violence Prevention Action Council and lead sexual violence prevention staff on advancing primary prevention of sexual violence. Through focused efforts on youth development, healthcare/public health systems and male leadership development, the staff and Action Council emphasized changing organizational practices and policies to influence community factors and norms and forge a major movement to prevent sexual violence in Minnesota. Prevention Institute also provided leadership training through the Minnesota Sexual Violence Leadership Academy to equip public health staff and others to advance prevention work throughout the state.
   
     
Oklahoma State Department of Health RPE Program
Funded by: Oklahoma State Department of Health
Prevention Institute facilitated a strategic planning session for the Oklahoma State Department of Health RPE Program. The project identified strategic objectives and infrastructure needs to advance primary prevention of sexual violence in Oklahoma through multidisciplinary collaboration
   
     

California Statewide Action Plan for the Prevention of Violence Against Women
Funded by: State of California, Department of Health Services
In collaboration with the California Department of Health Services, Epidemiology and Prevention for Injury Control (EPIC) branch and Sonoma State University, Prevention Institute facilitated planning meetings and co-developed a statewide action plan for preventing violence against women. The plan builds upon existing work to promote priorities that address multiple forms of violence against women and encourage change in policy and institutional practice.

   
     
From a Women's Problem to a Community Solution: Preventing Violence Against Women
Funded by: California Partnership to End Domestic Violence and DELTA Program
In collaboration with the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence and the DELTA Program, Prevention Institute facilitated this two-day training in Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, and San Diego  to promote effective primary prevention approaches that address the underlying factors that contribute to violence against women.
   
     
Building Partnerships Initiative to End Men's Violence (BPI)
Funded by: U.S. Department of Justice, Violence Against Women Office
In collaboration with the Family Violence Prevention Fund, Men Can Stop Rape, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse (MINCAVA), Prevention Institute aided in the development of an online training series for the Building Partnerships Initiative.  The discussion series, aimed particularly at practitioners who work with men, consisted of papers and accompanying case studies, developed by Prevention Institute.  The series was moderated by experts and documented best practices.

Mobilizing for a Safe USA: Focused Forums
Funded by: National Fire Protection Association/First Alert, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Children's Safety Network (CSN)
Prevention Institute conducted a series of nationwide forums to garner community and regional input into a national strategy for injury and violence prevention. The findings were presented to more than 700 people at Mobilizing for a Safe USA, a national leadership conference and are summarized in, Local Wisdom Is the Key: Findings from SafeUSA Focus Forums.
