Community Leaders Advancing Prevention and Public Health

Community prevention leaders are speaking out for prevention, and for the health and equity of communities across the country. On the national level, despite multiple efforts to cut the Prevention and Public Health funds, support for community prevention remains strong. As The California Endowment’s CEO and Founder Bob Ross said in the Huffington Post yesterday, “this vital investment of $15 billion... represents a game-changing strategy in health care.” Across the country, communities are already using this money to promote wellness and invest in health. Prevention Institute's Larry Cohen, along with Dr. Ursula Bauer, Director for the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, highlight prevention and equity in NPT Reports: Children's Health Crisis – Prevention, from Nashville Public Television. Through conversations with health care professionals, parents and policy makers, the documentary explores health that extends beyond medical care: where healthy options are accessible, affordable and a part of every day life.  "We need to look at how we can reconfigure our society, our environments, our policies, our priorities--so that we're designed for health,” says Bauer. Watch the documentary and view other videos on our Youtube channel, including “From Kools to Cancer Sticks,” chronicling how policy change can be used to shape norms and boost health.

Dr. Jeffrey Levi was appointed this week as chair of the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health. As the Executive Director of Trust for America's Health, Jeff Levi has been a tireless, effective and inspirational advocate for prevention and wellness for many years. We look forward to his leadership in shaping our national prevention efforts. The Advisory Group provides policy and program recommendations and advises the National Prevention, Health Promotion and Public Health Council on chronic disease prevention and management, integrative health care practices and health promotion. Yesterday the Advisory Group released the National Prevention Strategy Framework, a vital document to help guide the federal government and the nation: we applaud its emphasis on cross-cutting achievable ideas that will save money and lives.
