Listen Live Today: Prevention Leaders address the Joint Oversight Committee on Health
Today at 1:30pm PT/4:30pm ET, prevention leaders from across California will gather in Sacramento to explain the critical role of prevention in shaping a healthier and more equitable California—and describe how California’s prevention policies will, in turn, influence the nation’s prevention agenda. We invite you to listen live here (via a Windows Media Player), and read Prevention Institute’s Executive Director, Larry Cohen’s written testimony.
Prevention for a Healthier California, a Joint Oversight Hearing of the Assembly and Senate Committees on Health, is sponsored by California Assemblymember Bill Monning and Senator Ed Hernandez, and will feature some of California’s—and the country’s—leading voices on prevention. Prevention Institute’s Larry Cohen will provide the opening frame, highlighting connections between prevention, equity and cost-savings, along with key recommendations for advancing prevention in California and across the country, including a focus on health in all policies and prevention in government practices.
Larry will be followed by sixteen other prevention experts, including Dr. Tony Iton (The California Endowment), Prevention Institute Advisory Board Member Ellen Wu (California Pan-Ethnic Health Network), Marion Standish (Community Transformation Initiative, Public Health Institute), and Strategic Alliance Steering Committee member organizations, the California Center for Public Health Advocacy and the California Food Policy Advocates. Building on the success of prevention in California is crucial to the success of prevention everywhere, particularly since the Prevention and Public Health Fund has invested 20% of this year’s Community Transformation Grant funding in the state. Together, we can ensure that the vision of prevention is realized in every community across the country. “We’re beginning to change the ways our delivery system and our leadership thinks about health… We need to invest in prevention because it’s the smart thing to do. We need to invest in prevention because it’s the right thing to do.”
