Media Advisory: April 4th Revisited: Saving Lives, Building Dreams!

WHAT: April 4th Revisited: Saving Lives Building Dreams! is the country’s first national Town Hall Meeting on preventing violence affecting youth using a public health approach and advancing the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leaders within government, politics, health, entertainment, education, community and youth organizations, and the media will join together to transform what has traditionally been a day of mourning for the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. into a day that builds momentum to prevent violence affecting youth in the first place.

April 4th Revisited: Saving Lives Building Dreams! starts off with a national telebriefing featuring members of congress and mayors discussing the pandemic of violence affecting youth and prevention strategies. The briefing is followed by in-person panels.

WHEN: Wednesday, April 4th at 12noon to 1pm (ET)/ 9am to 10am (PT) (Telebriefing)

WHO: Coordinated by The Martin Luther King III Institute for Social Justice and Human Rights and the CDC-funded Urban Networks to Increase Thriving Youth (UNITY).

Telebriefing speakers include:

  • Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-35th)
  • Congressman Al Green (TX-9th)
  • Prevention experts on violence affecting youth:
  • Dr. Howard Spivak, Director, Division of Violence Prevention, CDC
  • Larry Cohen, UNITY Co-Chair and Executive Director Prevention Institute
  • Dr. Lauren Smith, Medical Director, MA Dept. of Public Health
  • Dr. John Rich, Chair Department of Health Management Policy, Drexel University
