A group of 27 people pose for a photo in front of a mural marked "Ninfa's The Original 1973," suggesting a gathering at a historical or significant location. The diverse group, displaying a mix of ages, races, and attire, seems to be at a social or professional event, indicated by their casual to business-casual clothes and name tags. They stand in a well-lit indoor space that appears to be a restaurant or public venue.

AESOP’s Leadership Network

Building a responsive support network for community leaders and advocates

AESOP’s (Activists Engaged in Sustaining Our Purpose & Power) Leadership Network strengthens the leadership, wellbeing, and long-term sustainability of social justice leaders. Many of these leaders experience structural and systemic barriers—including inequitable funding, and harmful organizational conditions—that mirror the challenges faced by the communities they serve. Leaders from our Communities of Care and Making Connections initiatives have emphasized the need for peer connection, collective care, and access to supportive resources to sustain their work. AESOP’s Leadership Network responds to this need by advancing culturally responsive approaches that reflect the intersections of arts, culture, healing, and advocacy. The network also supports long-term relationship building, collective reflection, and cross-regional peer connection among social justice leaders.

We collaborate with leaders across Texas and a group of subject matter experts to co-design and build a support network that strengthens participants’ individual and collective leadership. Taking place over a four-year period, from January 2023 through December 2026, this work identifies and documents approaches that sustain community-driven systems change and shares these lessons with the field to inform practices across organizations and philanthropic partners.

Primary activities:

  • Facilitating small-group discussion circles that support peer dialogue, idea exchange on participant-identified topics, and healing-circle discussions led by experienced facilitators.

  • Hosting in-person gatherings and events that offer culturally responsive programming grounded in arts, culture, healing, and advocacy.

  • Developing and maintaining a centralized resource hub with readings, media, and strategies to support leadership sustainability and cultivate conditions that enable leaders and movements to thrive over time.
