Racism as a public health crisis: From declaration to action
Jointly developed by Prevention Institute and Big Cities Health Coalition (BCHC), this session highlights research and practice-based learnings on the paths of action following declarations of racism as a public health crisis. The session includes a thematic content analysis of the declarations conducted by the Institute for Social Justice Research at Northeastern University and APHA; operational learnings, opportunities, and challenges in addressing structural racism drawn from geographically diverse big city health departments based on work by PI and BCHC; and examples and actions from the Boston Public Health Commission’s anti-racism efforts and partnerships.

Community-centered narratives to advance community safety
Ruben Cantu will co-present with the Annie E. Casey Foundation and FrameWorks Institute on best practices and solutions to center community in narratives on community safety. Narratives set the foundation for advancing community driven change – putting residents at the center and forefront of identifying challenges, solutions, and metrics for positive change in their environment, which will lead to more representative and engaging efforts to improve community safety. The session will highlight the importance of community-centered narratives and key elements to consider and share examples of strategies employed in local communities.

The intersection of social vulnerability, number of cases, and the government response during the first phase of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the United States
PI board member Lisa Cacari Stone is a contributing author on this policy research analysis that presents findings based on the relationship between the government response, the number of COVID cases, and the social vulnerability index.
