People, Parks, and Power: Building narrative power for park and green space equity

In 2022, with support from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Prevention Institute launched People, Parks, and Power (P3), the first national funding initiative in the U.S. to support power building by community-based organizations to reverse deep-seated park and green space inequities in Black, Latine, and Indigenous communities nationwide. P3 supports the grassroots organizations leading this work in 14 cities across the country through research, network building, strategic communications, and a peer-to-peer learning community. Now in its second phase of funding from RWJF, P3 seeks to amplify the leadership and lessons learned from these communities working to build power through park and green space advocacy.
Recognizing that how we talk about park and green space equity is critical for transformation, P3 has partnered with Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG), a nonprofit that works with community groups to use the power of the media to advance racial and health equity, including the importance of effective messaging in movement building. To understand how social narratives have helped—or hindered—progress on bringing park and green space equity to scale, BMSG has developed a messaging guide that highlights learnings from this partnership. The guide provides racial justice and public health advocates with frames, language, and communication tools to shape narratives that help decision-makers see park and green space equity as the result of an inclusive process and the source of community health, joy, and liberation.
We invite you to join PI and BMSG on May 1st at 11:30am-1pm PT in a conversation with two P3 Local Partners—South Bronx Unite and The Conscious Connect CDC—leaders in the movement for park and green space equity who have leveraged BMSG’s messaging guide to develop their own narrative and media strategies within their local communities. Throughout the dialogue, we will explore how to build narrative power for park and green space equity, craft effective messaging, and build community with other advocates nationwide. |

P3 is led and managed by Prevention Institute and supported by funding from RWJF. South Bronx Unite brings together neighborhood residents, community organizations, academic institutions, and allies to improve and protect the social, environmental, and economic future of Mott Haven and Port Morris. The Conscious Connect CDC reimagines and redevelops underutilized spaces for the purposes of education, culture, peace, + health—so that success is not defined by zip codes.
