Advanced messaging, framing, and narrative change on community safety.

With the support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and in partnership with FrameWorks Institute, we developed guidance for community agencies and organizations engaged in community safety work to strengthen their messaging and framing and ensure community-centered narratives are the norm. The messaging and framing work promotes responses that are rooted in community safety and investments as opposed to a criminal legal response which disproportionately impacts communities of color. These strategies and our research were presented at the 2022 American Public Health Association conference in Boston. This work has informed PI’s ongoing narrative work, including a community safety campaign developed and implemented with Big Cities Health Coalition. The campaign highlights how investing in communities—by supporting equitable access to affordable housing, green spaces, living wages, healthy food, education, and more—leads to investing in a future that is healthy and safe for all of us.
