2022

Strengthened our skills and capacity to engage, train, and support community residents and their leadership.

In Milwaukee, we co-designed and implemented Adverse Community Experiences and Resilience Resident Leadership Training, in partnership with RTI International and the Milwaukee (MKE) Office of Violence Prevention to identify, recruit, and mobilize residents to address violence and trauma at the community level. Our technical assistance builds on previous work with the MKE Office of Violence Prevention to develop its city-wide violence prevention strategy, the Milwaukee Blueprint for Peace, bringing training and support to four priority neighborhoods identified in the plan—Sherman Park, Amani, Historic Mitchell, and Old North Milwaukee. This work is intended to leave a trained cadre of resident leaders who are ready to use their voices and power to change the community conditions that contribute to violence and trauma across Milwaukee. In partnership with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Houston, we worked with local and national trainers to continue the six-year tradition of the GO Neighborhoods Training 4 Trainers leadership development program. The program is designed for community members interested in developing grassroots skills and networks to create strong, healthy communities. Nineteen leaders participated and graduated from the six-month environmental justice-focused T4T series in 2022. These leaders join a group of 176 T4T Alumni that support and develop solutions within and across Houston neighborhoods. In partnership with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), we co-designed and facilitated training to support the creation of community-clinical relationships and for family physicians and their coalition partners to meaningfully engage and identify solutions aligned with the needs and desires of their community. Emphasizing participatory approaches, power-sharing with the community, and authentic listening, PI supported AAFP partners to embed community-informed strategies to reduce clinical disparities into their implementation plans.
